The XL1, which is the much improved Volkswagen 1-litre concept car of 2002, is stuffed with a clutch of such surprises! It weighs just 795 kg, but features air-conditioner, the full ICE works, a comprehensive safety cell and a plug-in-hybrid system. It can accelerate up to 100 kmph in zero-emission mode and can cover up to 32 km without burning a single drop of diesel with the electric motor humming like a freshly stocked fridge or the whining of an undergeared forklift.
For long-term R & D, the Volkswagen will build this car in highly restricted numbers in Wolfsburg and plans for a broader sales from 2013. XL1 is a car that makes people rise their eyebrows!
